SUMMARY:Process-Oriented Hypnosis: Focusing on Structure\, Not Content\, in Hypnotic Interventions.
DESCRIPTION:Webinar held at 10 am EDT (Philadelphia)\n\nWorkshop Description: \nAs advances are made in better understanding the power of focus in shaping one’s\nsubjective perceptions and even one’s physiology\, the field of clinical hypnosis has played\nan especially important role in this ongoing process of discovery. Despite too many\nclinicians’ terribly misinformed dismissal of hypnosis as little more than a gimmick\, in fact\nhypnosis has evolved a strong scientific basis arising from its insights into neuroscience\,\ncognition\, suggestive language and information processing\, placebo and nocebo\nresponses\, the therapeutic alliance\, and more. \nJust as there are many different models of psychotherapy\, each with different foundational\nphilosophies and methods\, there are many different models of hypnosis\, each with a\ndifferent emphasis and utilizing different approaches. The highly innovative work of Milton\nErickson in particular is widely acknowledged by therapists who may or may not use\nhypnosis but are definitely influenced by his strategic methods. \nMilton Erickson was often credited with being a “mind-reader\,” but he simply said he was\nmore observant than most. Realistically\, there are many common denominators of human\nexperience that can make one seem a mind reader to a client when touching on them in\nthe course of therapy. Hypnosis can be especially well used to address generalities that\ncan have very specific effects. In this presentation\, we’ll explore this gentle style of\nprocess-oriented hypnotic intervention. The emphasis will be on targeting the structural\ncomponents of problems rather than their content. This means striving to understand how\nclients generate their symptomatic experience rather than attempting to explain why. \nPresenter:\n\nMichael D. Yapko\, Ph.D.\, is a clinical psychologist residing in Southern California. He is\ninternationally recognized for his work in advancing clinical hypnosis and outcome-focused\npsychotherapy\, routinely teaching to professional audiences all over the world. His\npresentations are well known for being both practical and enjoyable. \nDr. Yapko is the author of 16 books and editor of three others\, as well as numerous book\nchapters and articles on the subjects of hypnosis and the use of strategic psychotherapies.\nHis newest book\, Process-Oriented Hypnosis: Focusing on the Forest\, Not the Trees\n(W.W. Norton\, 2021)\, is the subject of this presentation. It was awarded the Arthur Shapiro\nAward for being the “Best Book on Hypnosis in 2021” by the Society for Clinical and\nExperimental Hypnosis. His other books include his recent 5th edition of his widely used\nhypnosis text\, Trancework: An Introduction to the Practice of Clinical Hypnosis as\nwell as Taking Hypnosis to the Next Level\, The Discriminating Therapist\, and\nMindfulness and Hypnosis: The Power of Suggestion to Transform Experience. \nSee www.yapko.com for teaching schedule and publications. Dr. Yapko is recipient of\nLifetime Achievement Awards from American Psychological Association Division 30’s\nSociety of Psychological Hypnosis\, International Society of Hypnosis’ Pierre Janet Award\nand The Milton H. Erickson Foundation. \n\n\nClick for Flyer\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nEarly Registration Fees\n\n\nGPSCH Member $100.00 USDNonmember $150.00 USDStudent/Resident/Intern $50.00 USD

SUMMARY:Mindful Hypnotherapy: The Basics and Clinical Applications
DESCRIPTION:Mindful hypnotherapy is an intervention that intentionally uses hypnosis (hypnotic induction\nand suggestion) to integrate mindfulness for personal or therapeutic benefit. Clinicians\nwho are only trained in mindfulness may have preconceived notions about hypnosis.\nLikewise\, individuals who are only trained in hypnosis may have self-limiting ideas about\nmindfulness. In addition\, there may be some problems or symptoms that that benefit most\nfrom hypnotic suggestions for change and others that a mindfulness approach\n(acceptance) is more beneficial. \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn about the conceptual basis and theoretical\nfoundations of mindful hypnotherapy and hypnotically oriented interventions in\npsychotherapy. Research on mindful hypnotherapy will be reviewed as well as\napplications. Mindful hypnotherapy will be considered in regard to stress and anxiety\nmanagement. Hypnotherapy presents an intriguing synchronicity with some aspects of\nmindfulness\, in that both practices involve focused attention\, experiencing the world\ndifferently\, and relaxation. \nProgram Learning Objectives: \nAt the end of the program\, participants will be able to: \n\n1. Describe at least 1 core concept related to mindful hypnotherapy \n2. Discuss the relationship between mindfulness and hypnosis. \n3. Identify 1 mindful hypnosis intervention from an eight-step mindful hypnotherapy\nprotocol. \n4. Discuss at least 1 hypnotic suggestion based upon mindful hypnotherapy concepts\nfor anxiety and stress reduction. \n5. Identify at least 1 advantage of mindful hypnotherapy versus mindfulness alone.\n\nPresenter: \nDr. Gary Elkins is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Baylor University in\nWaco\, Texas where he is the Director of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Program. He\nis the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis\nand Past-President of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis and American\nSociety of Clinical Hypnosis. He has over 200 publications and presentations. Dr. Elkins’\nbooks published include Mindful Hypnotherapy: The Basics for Clinical Practice and The\nHandbook of Medical and Psychological Hypnosis: Foundations\, Applications and\nProfessional Issues. He also has an upcoming book entitled\, Introduction to Clinical\nHypnosis: The Basics and Beyond. His background includes service as a military\npsychologist and as a medical associate of the Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest Medical\nCenter and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, Texas A&M\nUniversity College of Medicine. Dr. Elkins is board certified in Clinical Health Psychology\nand maintains a part-time private practice. His research has been continually funded by\nthe National Institutes of Health for the past 20 years in areas of hypnosis\, music\, and\nmindfulness in treatment of menopause/symptoms associated with aging\, pain\, stress\,\nsleep disturbances\, and post-traumatic growth. He is a research consultant to Mindset\nHealth on development of hypnotherapy apps; and to Boulder Crest Foundation regarding\npost-traumatic growth research. \n\n\nClick for Flyer\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nEarly Registration Fees\n\n\nGPSCH Member $100.00 USDNonmember $150.00 USDStudent/Resident/Intern $50.00 USD

SUMMARY:Designing Strategic Multiphasic Hypnotic Interventions for Enhanced Mind-Body Healing (Presenter: Carol Ginandes PhD.\, ABPP )
DESCRIPTION:The use of hypnotic interventions in myriad illness conditions may provide significant adjunctive contributions to medical patients in several ways: through the alteration of physical discomfort\, the alleviation of emotional distress (anxiety\, fear\, depression)\, enhanced ego-strengthening\, the replacement of helplessness with pro-activity and mastery\, the movement through unconscious impasses related to the illness condition\, and the facilitation of organic healing itself. In this clinical workshop\, participants will be introduced to the presenter’s strategic\, phase-oriented model with several associated techniques that can be tailored to patients with a wide variety of mind/body problems. The workshop will also include reference to various randomized controlled trials of applications of clinical hypnosis especially as related to documented ones such as: pain management\, surgical preparation\, accelerated post-surgical recovery and healing\, adjunctive cancer treatment\, gastrointestinal conditions\, skin disorders\, affect regulation\, and stress management. This workshop is for intermediate and advanced hypnosis practitioners seeking to reach the next level of proficiency in their clinical work with mind/body issues in treatment. \nProgram Learning Objectives: \nAt the end of the program\, participants will be able to: \n\nList four conditions for which hypnosis has been documented to facilitate clinical improvements\nDemonstrate the application of a multisensory imagery technique to assess a client’s native representational system\n Recognize three component strategies to foster hypnotic healing (creating personalized imagery for healing\, evoking states of deep relaxation\, targeting site specific healing)\n Recognize the kinds of hypnotic suggestions and phasic interventions that stimulate proactivity and mastery versus helplessness in medical patients \n\nPresenter: \nCarol Ginandes\, Ph.D.\, ABPP\, is a well-known health psychologist whose practice integrates hypnosis and meditation strategies with psychotherapy to address a wide variety of mind-body problems. She holds staff appointments at Harvard Medical School as assistant clinical professor of psychology and at McLean Hospital\, where she offers training and supervision. Her clinical research has focused on the leading edge of hypnotically accelerated healing. In addition to her written publications\, Dr. Ginandes has authored various medical hypnosis audio programs. \n\n\nClick for Flyer\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nEarly Registration Fees\n\n\nGPSCH Member $100.00 USDNonmember $150.00 USDStudent/Resident/Intern $50.00 USD

SUMMARY:Mindful Hypnotherapy for Taming Chronic Pain
DESCRIPTION:Bruce Eimer Ph.D.\, ABPP\nPatients on an unending search for satisfactory relief from chronic pain often become depressed\,\nangry and alienated. This makes them a challenge to treat and decreases the likelihood of their\nreceiving effective help. While hypnosis is an empirically validated treatment tool for pain\, its\nefficacy is dependent on multiple factors. This workshop will examine what these factors are and\nhow they interact. Then the session will provide concrete guidelines for utilizing these factors\nwhen using hypnosis to treat patients with chronic pain syndromes. A phase-oriented hypnotherapy\ntreatment model developed by the presenter will be described\, and the objectives of each phase\nalong with hypnotherapeutic techniques used in each phase of the treatment\, will be described and\ndemonstrated. \nBENEFITS. Attendees who work with or expect to work with chronic pain patients will be able\nto assess new patients with an understanding of the factors that can promote or interfere with\neffective pain treatment. This will enable attendees to avoid further alienating the already\ndisillusioned pain patient\, and more effectively use the clinical relationship in the service of the\ntherapy.
